The Scorecard

Appendix Z: The Scorecard

Make sure that the following are shown for you and other team members, before exchanging the card with your marker:

A table of Pars, Course Ratings and Slope Ratings for each set of tees is shown on the other side of the scorecard. “Alternative” indicates when the 10th hole is played from the forward tees as a par 3.

Please tick to indicate the tees used. This is especially important in when submitting cards for a new handicap or General Play scores for handicap purposes.

After the Round

After completing your round you should add up and enter the Player and Marker scores for OUT (holes 1 to 9), IN (holes 10 to 18) and TOTAL, and agree them with your fellow competitor. Then sign in Marker’s signature before exchanging cards and signing your own card in Player’s signature.

  • Only the gross scores need to be entered in columns A to D. Some players like to include the net score too, and it is not wrong to do so, as long as the gross score is also recorded.

  • There is no definitive method of indicating the holes on which players receive handicap strokes. Drawing a circle around the Stroke Index figure or adding a dot in the score columns are popular methods, as shown in the examples below.

  • Contrary to popular belief, if your make a mistake on the scorecard, you are not required to initial alterations.

  • Make sure that your name, the marker and player signatures and correct gross scores at each completed hole are clearly shown on the card. Failure to do this will lead to you being disqualified from the competition, although your score will still count for handicap purposes.
