Updated MGC webpages:

(Course Rating minus Par) as applied at Mapperley GC

From April 2024. the difference between Course Rating (C.R.) and Par will be included in the calculation of Course Handicaps:

Course Handicap   =   H.I.  x  ( Slope / 113 )   +   ( C.R.  -  Par )

Irrespective of which tees you are playing from your target for "playing to handicap" will always be:

  • 36 points in Stablefords, and
  • Net Par in Medals

When playing from forward tees you will receive fewer handicap strokes, but will require fewer points to play to handicap (P2H) as compared with now

For example, for a Male golfer with Handicap index of 10.0

From White Tees
  • C. R. 71.2, Par 71 (difference 0.2)
  • Currently his Course Handicap is 11 and 36 points is P2H
  • From April 2024 his Course Handicap will be 11 and 36 points is P2H
(i.e. no change because C.R. and Par are similar)
From Yellow Tees:
  • C. R. 69.1, Par 71 (difference 1.9)
  • Currently his Course Handicap is 11 and 38 points is P2H
  • From April 2024 his Course Handicap will be 9 and 36 points is P2H

From Blue Alternate Tees:
  • C. R. 67.8, Par 70 (difference 2.2)
  • Currently his Course Handicap is 10 and 38 points is P2H
  • From April 2024 his Course Handicap will be 8 and 36 points is P2H

For a Female golfer with Handicap index of 15.0
  • From Red Tees: C. R. 72.4, Par 74 (difference 1.6)
  • Currently her Course Handicap is 17 and 38 points is P2H
  • From April 2024 her Course Handicap will be 15 and 36 points is P2H

The most significant benefit of this change is that when more than one tee set is in use (such as when Men are playing from White Tees and Women from Red tees) no adjustments to Playing Handicaps are required in Stablefords because 36 points always represents playing to handicap.

And in Medals the only adjustment required is that Women receive extra strokes to reflect the difference in Par between the tee sets:

  • 3 strokes when men are playing the 10th as a par 4 (74 - 71)
  • 4 strokes when men are playing the 10th as a par 3 (74 - 70)

You will of course still be able to check your Course Handicap on the My England Golf app, the HowDidiDo app, on this website and on look-up tables that will be posted in and around the clubhouse.

When a hole is out of play you should enter hole "Not Attempted" in the My EG app, as shown here . . .

. . . . . and DO NOT enter a score for the Pond Hole which is not part of the measured course

How do I submit a General Play Score?

General Play Scores at Mapperley or any rated course in GB&I may be submitted and approved using the My England Golf app.

Note: General Play Scores are not acceptable when playing in a team competition.

There is guidance on submitting General Play Scores in the Competitions Hub. and in Terms of Competition, Appendix K.

Club & Player Responsibilities

A reminder from England Golf about the responsibilities of the golf club and individual members:

  • As part of the terms of the Club’s affiliation to England Golf, all organised competitions must be played to the Rules of Golf and the Rules of Handicapping using WHS Handicap Indexes
  • Players may not have more than one handicap.
  • The Handicap Allowances defined in the Rules of Handicapping, Appendix C are mandatory in all organised competitions. Regular informal competitions organised as roll-ups or society events fall into the category of organised competitions and are subject to the same rules.

Players are expected to:

  • Act with integrity by following the Rules of Handicapping and refrain from using or circumventing the rules for the purposes of gaining an unfair advantage

  • Attempt to make the best score possible at each hole

  • Submit Acceptable Scores for handicap purposes to provide reasonable evidence of demonstrated ability

  • Submit Acceptable Scores as soon as possible after the round is completed and before midnight local time

  • Play by the Rules of Golf

  • Certify the scores of fellow players having witnessed the round.

Where a player does not return their score for some reason, they are expected to provide the reason to the Committee and provide the card with the available hole scores.

Any player not returning the score will be subject to a Penalty Score being added to their handicap record. Any player who persistently refuses to  accept that they must follow the Rules of Handicapping may have their Handicap Index withdrawn for a specified period of time.

Further Information

Acceptable Scores: Competitions

  1. All 9 hole and 18 hole individual competition rounds in Medal, Stableford, Par/Bogey and Maximum Score formats must be submitted for handicap purposes, subject to the competition being played to the Rules of Golf on a measured course with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating.
  1. You are required to enter your scores into the computer via the PSI screen or HowDidiDo app before 10:00pm on the day of the competition (3:00pm for Seniors comps). This is important to ensure that your handicap updates overnight and so that your score is included in the daily Playing Conditions Calculation which could affect the handicap calculation of everyone else that submits scores on the same day.
  1. Failure to return scorecards and/or failure to enter scores via the PSI screen when required without good reason may result in the Committee applying a Penalty Score to a player’s  Scoring Record. For more persistent offences a player may lose the right to compete in Club Competitions for a specified period or have their handicap suspended.

Note: if the scores entered into the computer differ from those on the scorecard, the scores on the scorecard are deemed to be the scores returned. Accidentally entering an incorrect score on the computer will not lead to disqualification.

Acceptable Scores: General Play

  1. Players are required to register intention to submit a score from General Play BEFORE commencing the round. The preferred method of registering and submitting scores is through the My England Golf app.
  1. Members without access to the My EG app may use the PSI screen in the clubhouse or the HowDidiDo app. Because this does not require the marker to approve the score, you also have to provide a physical scorecard signed by the marker. Scores submitted via the My England Golf app do not require a physical scorecard to be submitted.
  1. After registering intent, should your score not be submitted or approved, you and your marker will receive a reminder email asking you to complete the process or contact the club if there is a valid reason why your score has not been returned. If you do not act, an automated Penalty Score will be applied to your handicap record, which could adjust your handicap upwards or downwards.
  1. Scores are not acceptable for handicap purposes when playing in team competitions. If you attempt to submit a General Play Score from a team competition it will be deleted from your Scoring Record.

Acceptable Scores: Match Play

While the Rules of Golf do not expressly prohibit the playing of a match whilst concurrently playing in a stroke play competition, it is not encouraged because of the significant differences between the 2 formats.

You are not permitted to play in a stroke play competition at Mapperley or submit a score for handicap purposes while simultaneously playing in a match.

Cross border scoring launched 13th June

Golfers are now able to submit General Play Scores from any affiliated golf courses in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales using the My England Golf app.

Not only does the new function allow players to submit scores in GB&I to their handicap record, but also permits their card to be attested by any member of an affiliated club or iGolf subscriber within the four countries.

Top tip . . . Looking for a player from one of the other home nations? - You need to search for them by their membership number and not name.
